Whether you’re looking to hone a skill you always wished you had or are running out of creative gift ideas, there are a host of wonderful independent businesses who run fantastic creative workshops in Edinburgh! We’ve selected a few of our favourite workshops for those of you who’ve secretly wanted to be a chef since you were little or know someone who would love to learn to sketch on the go! Treat yourself or a friend to an indulgent and fun experience.

1. Helen C. Stark’s Workshops

We’ve previously mentioned Helen’s wonderful book ‘Colouring Edinburgh’ in our Edinburgh Independent Gift Guide, but did you know that she also runs workshops in Edinburgh? In the past, she’s organised a range of workshops, including Lettering for Beginners, Creative Journaling, and watercolour workshops – amongst others! If you think one of her workshops would work well as a gift, there’s also the option of buying a workshop gift voucher for £30!

2. Mademoiselle Macaron

Have you always wondered how to make delicious macarons? Well, head along to Macaron HQ for a three hour class, where you will learn to make five different flavours of macaron! You’ll leave with a better understanding of the craft plus enough macarons for you and your friends. They also offer private classes for hen parties, a birthday celebration, or just a group obsession with macarons! If you can get a group of six to ten people together they’ll happily arrange a private macaron class for you.

3. Can to Candle

Can To Candle is a small batch candle company based just outside Edinburgh and they have a fantastic selection of 100% natural soy wax candles. They also offer half-day bespoke candle making workshops, which are a great way to enjoy some “me time” while learning a new hobby. Included in the price is the equipment, materials, workshop notes plus a hearty mid-morning refreshment consisting of tea, coffee, and homemade cake. By the end of the day, you’ll leave with a scented candle that you hand poured yourself. There’s also the option to buy a candle making voucher for £45, which would make a great present!

4. Coco Chocolatier’s Chocolate School

Coco Chocolatier craft their portfolio of premium chocolate bars in Edinburgh, using the world’s finest South American couverture. They also run a Chocolate Kitchen where you can make chocolate in a fun and friendly environment. It is run by their amazingly talented Chocolatiers and the day begins with a brief introduction to the history of chocolate, then the chocolate making begins! You’ll learn to hand temper chocolate on marble, make moulded chocolates, fruit-filled & infused broken chocolate, hand tempered chocolate shells, and produce filled chocolate caramels – Yum!

5. Edinburgh Sketcher’s Sketching Days

Mark from Edinburgh Sketcher is a local legend who started uploading his sketches of Edinburgh in 2010. He now offers commissions, prints, various merchandise, sketching workshops and sketching tours within the city, as well as live sketching for events such as festivals and weddings. If you’ve always wanted to learn to sketch, who better to teach you than Edinburgh Sketcher!

 6. Rose & Ammi

Based near Tollcross, Rose & Ammi are a small team of florists and plant addicts. If you’re in the area, it is well worth popping into their delightful green oasis of a shop. As well as running their shop and dressing wedding venues with their beautiful flowers, they also organise floral workshops for both budding enthusiasts and family friendly events.

7. Edinburgh New Town Cookery School

Fiona Burrell opened the doors of The Edinburgh New Town Cookery School in early December 2009. The school offers professionals and amateurs a wide variety of cookery courses, with over 15 courses to choose from across various skill levels so you are sure to find a course that suits! They even offer one-day courses, which would make an ideal gift for a foodie enthusiasts! Their courses range from artisan bread making to Japanese Cooking.
