What The Dickins: A Tale Of Edinburgh City

Our Homes From Home – Buckingham Terrace, West End

The Victorians in Edinburgh wanted to out do their Georgian predecessors by building even larger and grander buildings. It’s one of the first things you notice when you arrive at Buckingham Terrace. The street is very impressive. Buckingham Terrace is part of a group of top quality streets and terraces built at a similar time on either side of Queensferry Road, just over Dean Bridge.

You have a strong sense that the homes within are going to be as beautiful as the buildings are on the outside. That is certainly the case with our Buckingham Terrace home. It’s one of the best one bedroom homes we’ve ever looked after.

The beautiful sitting room opens onto a high quality kitchen with a great dining table, making this a brilliant home for entertaining.

The location of this home is great. Crossing over Thomas Telford’s Dean Bridge, you can walk to the West End and Princes Street in 15 minutes. Wonderful Stockbridge is just down the road. There you can make the most of the excellent local independent boutiques, food shops, cafes and restaurants as well as their brilliant Sunday market.

Lovers of art can wander around the corner to the two world class National Galleries on Modern Art. They both also have great cafes and shops! From there walk along the most beautiful pathway alongside the Water of Leith through the Dean Village back to Stockbridge. If life takes you North, then this location by Queensferry Road is excellent.

The Living Spaces

Visiting this home again this week ahead of writing this blog, I was struck by just how great it is. It’s been beautifully decorated and furnished and there’s an immediate sense of luxury. There’s an incredible sense of space for a one bedroom home too. The scale is what you expect to find with two bedrooms. Everything here has been very carefully considered.

This is a true home from home as it is home for several months a year for the owners who spend the rest of the year abroad. They have very high standards and have renovated their home to be completely comfortable. This means that guests also benefit from this thought and high standards. You’ll find everything you need and more when you stay in Buckingham Terrace.

The sitting room is so light and comfortable with leafy view from the large bay window.

The owners love Scottish art and there’s a great collection of art in the apartment. This is also a brilliant home for entertaining as the living space is perfect for bringing friends and family together.

The sitting room is wonderful. There’s a huge bay window with lovely leafy views and lots of comfy seating. The large chair by the window is the perfect place for curling up with a good book and a cup of tea or glass of wine.

At the back of the sitting room, there’s a desk area which is tucked away. It’s perfect if you need to work from home. Throughout the home there are interesting objects gathered from the owners travels. You’ll also find a selection of good books and magazines.

On a cold or rainy day, switch all the lamps on and the space feels very cosy and comforting. Staying at home all day in this apartment is rather tempting!

It’s very well equipped for cooking at home and making the most of the excellent local food shops in Stockbridge like Bowers the butchers who specialise in game and Armstrongs the fishmonger.

There’s an archway between the kitchen and sitting room, which means that there’s an open plan feel, but also both rooms are separate. The best of both worlds!

The Bedroom and Bathrooms

One of life’s luxuries is to have your own bathroom and that is possible in this home because as well as an ensuite shower room, there is a second bathroom which has a shower over the bath tub.

The bedroom doesn’t disappoint either. There’s a superking size comfortable brass bed which is made up with great quality linens and luxury throws. The room is quiet as can be with no traffic noise, so you will sleep well here. There’s lots of storage too.

Our first guest in Buckingham Terrace loved saying there. She’s a regular Dickins guest and her review was ” I am happy to say it is very great, wonderful and a beautiful flat. It is the best one I have ever rented in Edinburgh and of course I will rent it again when I am next in Edinburgh.” So, we feel confident that all guests will have an equally positive experience of staying in Buckingham Terrace.
