When choosing suppliers for our series on Edinburgh’s Best Shopping, The Tailor Retailored simply had to feature. The company aim to provide the very best, luxury Scottish cashmere knitwear for men. Each of their men’s cashmere jumpers is crafted in Scottish workrooms using age old traditional artisanal methods, using only very finest, luxury Scottish cashmere fibres and yarns.
Headed up by John MacEwan and Richard Olive, The Tailor Retailored draw on the fashion, marketing, design and cashmere production experience of the team to bring a fresh, modern and seasonal relevance to men’s cashmere knitwear. The pair has previously worked and designed for international brands such as Kenzo, Lagerfeld, Balenciaga and Scottish cashmere womenswear brand Belinda Robertson.

We spoke to John MacEwan about the collection, items that could make lovely presents this Christmas and why Edinburgh at Christmas is even more special than usual.
When did you open?
We launched The Tailor Retailored store in Edinburgh’s historic Grassmarket in July this year, it’s our first chance to show off not only our collection but the brand’s ethos and vision.
What was the inspiration for The Tailor Retailored?
We are passionate about knitwear and the role in plays in today’s man’s wardrobe. We had a vision to redefine cashmere knitwear for the modern well-styled gent backed by the heritage of one of Scotland’s most iconic industries.
Our inspiration comes from all sorts of touch points; great style, trends, colour and the seasons. At The Tailor Retailored we are all about understated construction and meticulous craftsmanship. With updated fits, and well-appointed detailing each piece is crafted, in Scotland, from the finest cashmere yarns providing a luxe fix of exclusive, contemporary style.
Could you tell us about 3 things in your shop that would make ideal presents?
Our collection has three core stories:
A sweater from our Essentials collection, designed in updated classic crew, v, and roll neck they are eminently wearable and would provide the recipient a fix of everyday luxury.
A gift of one of our Editioned sweaters, more trend driven, they come in very short finite runs, often hand finished they are perfect for someone stylish and very special.
Thirdly, our collection of Accessories provide the perfect little extravagant outfit lift, ranged from scarves to socks in pure cashmere and starting at under £40 – any man, or indeed girl, would be delighted to receive.
Which item you sell would you love to find in your own stocking on Christmas morning?
Our Mapplethorpe, a chunky 5ply hand framed crew-neck sweater in black, it’s uber stylish yet relaxed – perfect dressed up under a jacket or with jeans for laid back weekend chic.
What makes Christmas in Edinburgh special?
Already beautiful, the city really shines in its Christmas dressing. There’s an amazing selection of independent stores and artisan producers that make shopping feel like a journey of discovery. Oh, and the hospitality of the people – there’s always the opportunity to raise a glass or two!
