What The Dickins: A Tale Of Edinburgh City

Homes From Home – Fettes Row

Fettes Row is home to a family who live abroad but love spending a few months of the year in Edinburgh. After recent renovations, they decided to welcome guests into their home. Leading down the quaint stone stairs to the basement level front door, you’re not quite sure what to expect. Once inside, you are welcomed to a very special home.

Fettes Row – Upper Level

Fettes Row

Split over two levels, the space and layout of this property is well thought out. Entering the property on the upper level you find the social space of the home. It includes a bathroom, with jacuzzi bath, an ample boot room and a bright lounge. Last but certainly not least is what we feel is the heart of this wonderful home, the kitchen.

Fettes Row

This kitchen is made for feasting!

So much more than a kitchen, this large and luxurious space has a dining table for eight. You’ll also find a full range cooker and all the amenities you could need. Double French doors lead on to the private courtyard, there is a garden beyond however, this is shared with the whole building.

At Dickins, we champion self catering accommodation because we believe it gives our guests more freedom, control and convenience. With local food shops nearby, Fettes Row is a wonderful example of what the self catering experience can add to a holiday. Guests can cook up a feast, whilst getting a real taste of local food and ingredients.

We also offer our customers a Fridge Fill service as we have teamed up with Artisan Larder. They work with some of Scotland’s finest small artisan local producers and Scottish produce to create larder packs. Your larder pack will be at your apartment when you arrive.

Natural light brightens the lounge, glowing with warmth. Big, comfortable sofas provide a perfect place to sit back and enjoy the large screen TV. You could just as easily find yourself drawn to an evening of drink and chatter. Perhaps you will be inspired by the desk near the window to write about your Edinburgh experiences. It’s a wonderful room to spend time in.

Fettes Row – Lower Level

Fettes Row

After a busy day of Edinburgh exploring, head down the tartan carpeted stairs and tuck yourself in for the night.

The different atmospheres between the two levels make it easy to shut out the world once you are down stairs. Rest in a ridiculously comfortable bed and prepare for another busy day tomorrow, completely switched off from the world. This lower basement level is home to the three cosy bedrooms with natural light and a second bathroom.

The colour palette throughout the home is a mix of neutrals, whites and greys with splashes of blues and reds, creating a welcoming yet personalised space.

Tasteful touches and accessories can also been seen throughout, collected by the family over years.

When you bring yourself to leave Fettes Row, you will find yourself on the doorstep of Scotland’s capital city. You’re in the heart of the New Town and there is a lot to explore…

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, the  New Town spans from the city centre down to the bottom of Dundas Street and along. Made up from many smaller communities, our Fettes Row home is in the leafy locality of Canonmills, nestled between Stockbridge and Broughton.

Canonmills

Within Canonmills, you will find an array of tasty eateries such as the New Chapter, who recently released a new menu, New Town Deli and Meltmongers. Oh, and don’t miss out on tasty treats from Cuckoo’s Bakery and Archipelago bakery! You will also find boutique clothing and charity shops like Epitome and Cattitude along Dundas Street. Around the corner on Brandon Terrace you are spoiled for choice with three coffee shops to choose from, Coffee Angel, Blue Bear Café and Di Giorgio.

Fettes Row

One20 is a fine Italian café and wine bar, owned and run by a father-son duo and one of our favourites in the area. Offering pastries and coffee along with hearty Italian meals and fine wines, they are open from 10 every morning and anytime is a good time to visit! Their burrata is the best in town and One20 is located on Dundas Street just around the corner from our Fettes Row home.

Looking up to the Scots Monument from Dundas Street

Dundas street is your route to town, looking up from the bottom you can see the Scots Monument on Princes Street. You can’t get lost when make a straight beeline for the historic city centre. Buses run along Dundas Street too so if the hill looks a little steep, a bus will be along soon.

We do recommend walking as it is a great chance to take in the many independent shops and galleries. Near the top of Dundas street you will find a cluster of art spaces like The Fine Art Society, Colours Fine Art Gallery, Open Eye Gallery and the Scottish Gallery, a perfect preamble before arriving at the National galleries in the city centre.
