Meet Frontiers Woman – An Inspiring Edinburgh Boutique

This month we’d like to introduce you to another one of Edinburgh’s must-visit independent retailers, Frontiers-Woman. You’ll find this inspiring shop on Stafford Street, tucked into the heart of the city’s West End.

Friendly staff are always on hand to help women feel confident in their clothes. Frontiers’ focus is on finding pieces that you can live in and accessories that are unique. Beautiful knitwear, classic accessories, and a stunning selection of shoes is sure to entice you. For over two decades Frontiers has taken pride in building collections that embrace all types of women, and stocking luxury brands you won’t find elsewhere. It’s no wonder they have such an excellent reputation. 

We’ve asked Frontiers to tell us a more about the shop and give us their best tips for what to wear this winter, but it gets better! They are generously giving away a £150 gift card to one of our lucky readers. Details for entering are at the bottom of the page.

1. Could you tell us about your business and how it started?

Frontiers was established over twenty-five years ago, whilst being a knitwear designer for labels such as Margaret Howell, Hackett, Gieves and Hawkes. We opened our first store on the Royal Mile and after a number of years Kim, the owner’s daughter, came on board. Now we are in our store on Stafford Street. We stock labels such as Folk, YMC, Sideline, Mads Norgaard and Penelope Chilvers, among many others. We also have a men’s store that has recently moved into the premises across the street from us.

2. What makes Frontiers unique?

The fashion industry is a place that can easily gobble you up. We focus more on the needs of the woman wearing our clothes, rather than what’s trending on the high street. The ‘everyday’ woman is our biggest inspiration and our ideal customer. We like to see women wear the clothes rather than the clothes wear them.

3. With so many styles out there, how do you select pieces that reflect your brand?

We stick to our ethos, which is to buy quality over quantity. While we specialise in knitwear, we like to have a well-rounded selection of items to ensure every eventuality is covered.

4. If Edinburgh were a woman, what do you think her style would be?

I imagine if this city were a woman, she would have to be a pretty practical dresser to negotiate the weather and the cobbled streets! A style somewhere between Iris Apfel and Jean Shrimpton; ready for any eventuality, always put-together, and unmistakable.

5. What are some of your best selling items at the moment?

With the party season kicking off, out best selling item at the moment is the Cryilla skirt by Baum. Another item flying off the shelf is the Libertine-Libertine lovely sloppy, roll neck jumper.

6. Do you have advice for anyone who has yet to decide what they’re wearing to this year’s Christmas parties?

Wear something you feel comfortable in, which will make you feel special. A great line is Baum with their classic cuts, great use of colour, prints, and casual glamour.

7. What must-have item should be in everyone’s closet this winter?

The classic Italian fur-lined boots from Fracap and the pea coat by Folk.

8. What’s your go-to winter accessory?

Without a doubt, Jo Gordon knitwear is the ultimate winter accessory.

9. Here at Dickins, we’re all about Edinburgh. What would your ideal day out in Edinburgh be?

Our combined ideal day in Edinburgh would include a bit of swimming at Drumsheugh Baths, a trip to the Modern Art Gallery or a visit to the zoo. Ultimately, we’d all like to end up at L’escargot Blanc for a big glass of white wine.
