It makes sense to start with one of Edinburgh’s most famous places for soup, Union of Genius, Scotland’s first soup cafe. This popular place aims to use only the highest quality local ingredients and keeps a close eye on their carbon footprint. They use only recyclable packaging and what’s even better is that you can get free soup when you bring your own container or return their takeaway packaging! Just around the corner from the National Museum of Scotland, Union of Genius in a convenient spot if you’ve spent your day trekking around the Old Town. What’s really fun about this cafe is that there are various ways to enjoy their soup. Of course, there’s the traditional way (soup in a bowl) or you can slurp from one of their delicious edible bread bowls, or even sample three of their soups with a selection of artisan bread. With a warm atmosphere and so many soups to choose from, this cosy spot makes the top of our list.

One of our favourite places to steal away to during our lunch breaks is Archipelago Bakery, fortuitously located just a few doors down from our office in the New Town. Archipelago is a small, independent and organic bakery that puts a lot of thought into their food. All of their products are either organic, local or of very high quality, and their food is made from scratch every day. They continuously strive to perfect their tried and tested recipes, and we can vouch for this, as they have some of the tastiest and freshest soup this side of Princes Street! Their homemade soup with artisan bread and butter makes for the perfect cold-weather lunch. Finish off with a warm cup of locally produced Rare-Bean Coffee and a slice of handmade cake.

4. Laksa at Kampong Ah Lee

For the adventurous foodies, this spicy and fragrant Malaysian noodle soup is the perfect way to warm up. Kampong Ah Lee is one of few Malaysian restaurants in Edinburgh and a popular Newington hangout. The Laksa soup is our dish of choice on their mouthwatering menu – a spicy curried soup made with coconut milk and thick wheat noodles or rice vermicelli and served with your choice of chicken or seafood. Slurp slowly and let this spicy kick warm you up from the inside out!
