What The Dickins: A Tale Of Edinburgh City

Meet Grow Urban – An Edinburgh Plants & Botanical Goods Shop

Grow Urban is one of the newest independent shops to open in Edinburgh. Owner Graham Savage previously owned a bakery business in the capital but decided to revisit his childhood roots in gardening and opened Grow Urban in April of 2019.

Located on Grove Street in Fountainbridge, this beautiful and inspiring shop has a focus on plants and botanical goods. Designed with urban gardening in mind, you can almost think of Grow Urban as a mini garden centre in the middle of the city.

In a welcoming and friendly space, knowledgable staff provide simple and straight-forward advice on how to choose and care for your greenery. They have a range of unusual and tropical plants on offer and their in-house ‘potting shed’ is stocked with gardening tools, composts, plant-feed, and pots in all shapes and sizes. With locally-roasted coffee and homemade cakes on offer, you can relax and enjoy the lush atmosphere while you plan your urban garden. Their stock changes weekly, so each time you visit you can discover something new.

We spoke with Graham from Grow Urban, who told us more about this lush Edinburgh business and how you can win a beautiful terrarium!

1. Could you tell us about the business and how it started?

In short, we’re a plants and botanical goods shop specialising in rare and unusual tropical houseplants. We are very much here to offer friendly advice and help our customers choose plants suitable for their homes.

We opened at the end of April 2019. I previously owned a bakery business in Edinburgh which was sold in 2017. Growing up, I had a love of plants instilled in me by my mother, who owned a garden centre in Dumfries and Galloway. After taking some time out since closing my bakery, I’ve reconnected with my roots and decided to pursue a new venture.

2. What makes Grow Urban unique and stand out from other plant and flower shops?

Grow Urban is more than just a botanical shop as we also offer coffee by Mr. Eion and locally baked cakes to be enjoyed while you ship. At Grow Urban, you’ll be surrounded by tropical plants in a unique Edinburgh building – built in 1864.

As well as a plethora of urban gardening products including feed, composts, and tools, we source unique products from across Europe. We stock items like Bergs Pots, quirky prints, and gifts. We also value the importance of our customers having plant-care confidence and take pride in creating our own care-labels, unique to each purchase.

3. What can people expect when visiting the shop?

We aim to create a friendly atmosphere with good tunes and a colourful array of plants and products.

4. In three words, how would you describe Grow Urban?

Vibrant. Lush. Friendly.

5. What’s your favourite thing about running your shop?

Seeing people’s faces light up when they enter the shop for the first time.

6. What are some of your favourite plants and flowers right now?

We have been loving the Dracaena fragrans, also known as ‘Janet Craig’. This species makes an elegant floor plant with its lush, shiny leaves. It is known for its air-purifying qualities and is an excellent statement piece for your home.

7. For anyone who’s new to caring for plants and would like to get started, what are some of your best tips?

My best tip – mist, mist, mist! Most leafy houseplants are tropical and therefore love humidity – give them a mist with water every morning to keep them looking lush. We sell a range of misters in-store.

8. What does 2019 have in store for Grow Urban?

We hope to work with other like-minded businesses and have pop-ups across Edinburgh. And we will continue to offer an array of beautiful tropical plants that change each week to fill everyone’s houseplant needs!
