Christmas carol concerts make for a fabulously festive night out, so why not take a break from the manic Christmas preparations and crowded streets to enjoy a lovely atmospheric Christmas carol service with friends or family. With numerous carol services taking place in Edinburgh from now until Christmas, you’ll be spoiled for choice, so we’ve selected a few of our favourites!

1. Carol Service in Aid of Mercy Ships

  • Where: St Mary’s Cathedral
  • Date & Time: 12 December at 7.30pm
  • Tickets: Free (There will be a collection for Mercy Ships)

Located at the stunning St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, the charity Mercy Ships is hosting its Scottish Christmas Carol Service. The charity is the world’s largest civilian hospital ship, the Africa Mercy, to deliver free, world-class healthcare, as well as carrying capacity building and sustainable development programmes to those without access in the developing world.

 2. Carol Concert in Aid of Feed the Minds

  • Where: Greyfriars Kirk
  • Date & Time: 14 December at 7pm
  • Tickets: £3-£5

This promises to be the perfect way to celebrate Christmas in the magical setting of Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh, on Thursday the 14th of December. The concert will include a mix of singalong carols and stunning choral performances by the joyful Edinburgh Telephone Choir to get you into the festive spirit.

3. Christmas Carol Ceilidh

  • Where: Greyfriars Kirk
  • Date & time: 17 December at 7pm
  • Tickets: £5

Here’s an event for all of you out there who enjoy a good old ceilidh. A festive celebration with food and song, plus proceeds being donated to charity it sounds like a fun event. So put on your dancing shoes and grab a friend!

4. Lessons and Carols for Advent & Christmas

  • Where: St Giles’ Cathedral
  • Date & time: 18th December at 6pm
  • Tickets: Free

What could be more magical than having St Giles as the backdrop for a carol service? Head along to St Giles’ annual carol service for Advent, with music and readings reflecting the journey from Advent to Christmas.

5. CLIC Sargent Carol Concert

  • Where: Usher Hall
  • Date & time: 13 December at 7.30pm
  • Tickets: From £12-£20

The CLIC Sargent Carol Concert is huge collaborative project – with pupils from The City of Edinburgh Music School, Flora Stevenson’s Primary, two instrumentalists from Broughton High School, Lothian Hospitals choir, as well as accompanists, the fabulous Thistle Brass and John Kitchen on the organ. The event sounds like an unforgettable evening!

6. Carols By Candlelight

  • Where: Usher Hall
  • Date & time: 20 December at 7.30pm
  • Tickets: From £19.50-£37.50

This event is guaranteed to get you in the festive spirit! Set in the beautiful Usher Hall, enjoy an evening out to listen to an exquisite concert of carols and seasonal classics staged in full 18th Century costume in an evocative candle-lit style setting.

7. Lunchtime Carols for all 

  • Where: St Cuthbert’s Church
  • Date & time: 22 December at 12pm
  • Tickets: Free

Take time out of your lunch break, or escape from the shops, and head to St Cuthbert’s Church to listen and participate in carol-singing. Their beautiful mighty organ will company the singing, and admission is free.
