5 Great Edinburgh Sunday Roasts

Sunday roasts for me conjure up memories of laughter and the warmth of us all in the kitchen and eating as a family. My mum cooks that best Sunday Roast (most mums do). In my house it was always roast beef and the sides where always the same – buttery carrots, lots of crispy roasted potatoes, silky green beans, homemade Yorkshires and gravy!

When it comes to enjoying a Sunday Roast out and about in Edinburgh, it definitely has had a modern approach applied to it with carve your own, sharing platters and huge thick cuts of meat dished up for you to tuck into. Here are my top 5 places in the Burgh to get nostalgic about the great Sunday roast.

Malmaison, the Shore

If you’re in need of blue sky and beautiful scenery then there is no better place for Sunday Lunch than here. They have a gorgeous patio area as well as their lovely Chez Mal Brasserie. They offer two options, beef and my favourite, roast chicken.

The half roast chicken is served on its own with glazed vegetables and potatoes served separately. The chicken is plump and moist, the skin is crispy and the tangy cranberry stuffing and gravy just make this roast immensely satisfying. Their Sunday lunch is £19.95pp and includes unlimited hors d’oeuvres and a dessert (if you have room).

Kyloe, West End

Imagine your ideal Family Sunday Roast – picture fluffy roast tatties with that wee crispy bite, a massive gravy boat of a Yorkshire pudding and sweet root vegetables all accompanying a large joint of perfectly cooked roast beef that is carved at your table. Kyloe is the best place for a special family get-together.

And if there is still room, you can enjoy a pud! Family Sunday Roast for 4 people – £100.00.

The Ox, London Street

The only place to offer a selection of roasts – Rib of Beef, Bay Roasted Leg of Lamb or a Veggie Roast with all the trimmings. Best of all The Ox now offers a classic cauliflower cheese as one of their sides. Oh my – Sunday Roast just got better.

Top this off with one of their homemade desserts and you’ve got all the ingredients for a perfect Sunday. Vegetable Roast – £11.95; Roast Beef – £12.95; Roast Lamb – £13.50.

Chop House, Constitution Street or Market Street

Whether you want the roast all to yourself or fancy sharing it, the Chop House will provide.

If you are opting to have it all to yourself, you’ll be served up their Aberdeen Angus Beef with what has to be one of the tastiest gravies I’ve had. The bone marrow gravy has a depth of flavour that compliments the roasties, horseradish cream, vegetables and yorkies!

But if you are keen to share opt for the cut of all beef cuts, the Chateaubriand 500g fillet cooked exactly how you like it. Either way you are in for a treat! £16.50pp or £65.00 sharing.
