What The Dickins: A Tale Of Edinburgh City

Meet Shawna – Our New Social Media Manager!

Shawna Law has just joined Dickins as our Social Media Manager, while the lovely Nina is on maternity leave. Shawna may be known to you because of her hugely successful Instagram account @exploringedinburgh, which started as a project for her Business Management degree at the University of Edinburgh. Shawna knows Edinburgh and we’re excited to have her as part of our team.

1. What was the last photo you took?

While I was out on my evening walk yesterday, I came across the loveliest carpet of autumn leaves and just had to stop and snap it!

2. What would your super power be?

It’s not a typical super power, but, I’d love to be able to take photos with my eyes!

3. What’s your guiltiest pleasure?

Personally, I love curling up on the couch and watching a classic 80’s film – anything from a John Huges movie to Indiana Jones to Dirty Dancing!

4. What’s your favourite room at home?

I think I would have to say my bedroom. It has a wonderful view of the woods behind our house, which is especially beautiful during snowy weather. Also, since moving back to live with my parents, it’s the one room where I get to put my own stamp on it!

5. If you could go back in time, where would you go?

I think it would be amazing to travel back in time and visit Old Edinburgh for a day. To see Scottish legends (like Robert Burns) and infamous Scottish characters (like Deacon Brodie) wandering down the cobbled streets and generally experience Auld Reekie first-hand!

6. Who would you invite to your dream dinner party?

I would love a small dinner party consisting of old Hollywood legends Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, one of my favourite authors Jane Austen, and Michael Palin – I think he’d have some fascinating stories about his many travels around the world.

7. Where would you take a first-time visitor to Edinburgh to introduce them to the city?

I thoroughly enjoy introducing first-time visitors to the city, especially taking them off the beaten track to see Edinburgh’s hidden gems. Therefore, I would start our day in Stockbridge with a visit to Circus Lane, then perhaps pause for brunch at Cowan & Sons. After, we would take a leisurely stroll along the Waters of Leith Walkway and end up in one of my favourite spots in Edinburgh, Dean Village! Perhaps it’s a bit ambitious, but, I’d also feel obliged to show them Old Town, so we would hop on a bus to explore the Royal Mile. To finish our day, I’d love to have a walk up Calton Hill and then stop at The Gardener’s Cottage for dinner.

8. Where’s your favourite spot in Edinburgh for a cup of tea?

Strumpets! Their staff are always so friendly, plus, they also introduced me to – Glasgow-based tea house – Tchai-Ovna, which has become one of my favourites. Furthermore, their shop is a lovely combination of bright yet cosy – the perfect place to sip away and enjoy a home baked treat!
