What The Dickins: A Tale Of Edinburgh City

Edinburgh’s Best Shopping: Moleta Munro

As part of our series on Edinburgh’s Best Shopping, we spoke to Juliet Munro, co-owner of interior shop, Moleta Munro. She told us about her inspiration for the shop, and which products might make lovely Christmas presents this year.

When did you open?

Moleta Monroe was founded in 2007 by myself (Juliet Munro) and my business partner, Justin Baddon.

What was the inspiration for the shop?

Both Justin and I used to work in London in media and fashion. We have always been enthusiasts of mid-century, particularly Scandinavian, design. We wanted to share our knowledge and pursue our passion for design by opening Moleta Munro and relocating to Scotland.

Could you tell us about 3 things in your shop that would make ideal presents?

BIRD - Moleta Munro

BIRD by Architectmade – this is a lovely handmade bird that lifts the spirit by its beautiful simplicity, changes from male to female by turning the body.

Kristian Vedel designed his family of BIRDs – children, parents and grandparents back in 1959. They are all handmade by a small wood turner in Denmark who only uses high quality smoked and natural oak wood. By tilting their heads in virtually any direction, the BIRDs can express every frame of mind – happy, sad, curious, alert, etc. The bodies can be turned upside down making it either a male or female. – El Grecco Gallery

Hay Cushion

Hay cushion by Nathalie du Pasquier – original Memphis designer.  Very graphic very cool.

Wrong for Hay is an exciting collaboration between Danish design brand HAY and London-based designer Sebastian Wrong. The collection includes lighting, furniture, textiles and accessories from both established and emerging designers. – Wrong for Hay

FLOS IC Table Lamp

I.C table light by FLOS.  Beautiful lines and a nod to the fifties.

This contemporary light was designed by Michael Anastassiades in 2014 and consists of a mouth blown opaline sphere held up by a brassed steel frame. The opaline glass diffuses a tantalizing balance of light to any space. – Flos

If you were to be given a gift from your own shop, what would you like and why?

I would love the FLOS chandelier – classic Italian lighting – as it would look wonderful in my dining area.

What do you love most about Christmas in Edinburgh?

I love the Christmas tree in St. Andrews Square and the ice skating rink. Stories around the Christmas tree in the storytelling centre where I take my children is also very magical.

We would love to hear from you on social media. Tag us on Instagram or Twitter using #WhatTheDickins and share your Edinburgh experience with others.
