The Photographer's Studio at Rock House is a magical Edinburgh landmark home with a fascinating history. Rock House is known as the most important address in photography because from 1843 to 1847, Rock House was the home and studio of pioneering photographers, Robert Adamson and David Octavius Hill. Together, they are widely credited with having established the use of photography as an art form and no conversation about the history of photography can take place without reference to them. They used the garden and terrace at Rock House when creating photographs as they needed sunlight for the calotype process. Major collections of their work are held in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and The Getty Museum.

Rock House is extremely private, being accessed through a rather magical ornate wrought iron gate on Calton Hill. The views from The Photographer's Studio are very special. In 2015, Rock House was refurbished by Studio Reed ans they restored the house with great sensitivity and style. It's stunning environment.

The Photographer's Studio is an absolutely charming folly building within the garden of Rock House an sitting on the site of Hill and Adamson's original photographic studio.

The carefully considered traditional exterior, designed by Edinburgh architects Groves-Raines in 2000, has a refined ogee roof and ingenious interior. Once inside The Photographer's Studio it's almost impossible to believe that you are less than two minutes from Princes Street.

You climb a tiny wooden staircase into what must be the most romantic and charming room in Edinburgh. The room is octagonal in shape with a domed ceiling and there are three windows all with stunning views. There are window seats under the windows giving a heavenly place to sit and watch the world go by. There's a wood burning stove, sofa and chairs, a dining table and TV. With the fire lit, you may never want to leave. The kitchen is cleverly designed to fit within cupboards which can be open and on display or closed up and hidden. There is a full sized oven but light meals are probably practical, and with the wide range of restaurants on the doorstep, you’re spoiled for choice with options for eating out.

The double bedroom is on the lower floor of the studio, along with a lovely shower room, accessible from the hallway.

The Photographer's Studio is as romantic as it gets. Magical memories will be made here.

It is available for self-catering holiday lets, the Edinburgh Festival and city and weekend breaks.

"We stayed in the Photographer's Studio on our wedding weekend and it couldn't have been more perfect. The studio is right in the middle of Edinburgh but it still feels very secluded and you're surrounded by greenery which I love. The studio in itself was so charming and quaint and very romantic! After getting married at the register office we came back, opened a bottle of bubbles and relaxed in front of the fire – a perfect moment! The bed was incredibly comfortable and we slept so well. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Photographer's Studio for a wedding stay or any other occasion!" - Nina A

"A pre-Christmas break in Edinburgh was made extra special when we stayed at The Photographer's Studio. A wonderfully romantic spot, beautifully decorated and the bed was heaven! I would love to come back sometime and stay in Rock House itself but the Studio will always be a very special memory for us". - Gary S
