What The Dickins: A Tale Of Edinburgh City

Something special happened at AJ Brown’s Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival show!

Edinburgh Jazz and BLues Festival

Dickins were offered the lovely chance of seeing AJ Brown at the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival. Now, to be perfectly honest with you – I’ve never been to a Jazz or Blues concert and there was a serious sense of trepidation. I had no idea what to expect. My musical taste is more in the direction of obscure Scottish indie bands – but I am very open to new things. But something happened that I wasn’t expecting at all.

AJ Brown has me hooked on the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival!

AJ Brown’s enthusiasm lit up the crowd !

So just to give you some background, AJ Brown is a young vocalist from Rishworth who is breaking his way into the mainstream. If I’m honest with you this was a lot more than I knew before I saw him. Afterwards I wanted to know much more!

When I arrived in the Speigeltent in St Andrews Square, I was quite blown away at how packed it was! My friend and I could barely get a seat. This was 5.30pm on a Friday – lots of people would have just finished work and this tent was rammed!

The Spiegeltent was packed for AJ Brown!

AJ then arrived on stage. The first thing you notice is that he’s a very stylish young guy. He then opened his mouth and started to sing – I was blown away. If you imagine what would happen if you mixed hip sound of Jamie Cullen with classic crooning of Michael Buble – then you end up with AJ Brown.

Starting out the set with some classics like ‘Midnight Train to Georgia’ got the crowd going and then started mashing-up an original song with Stevie Wonder. His show was an hour long and it absolutely flew by! It was so good that I will certainly be heading to see him again before the end of the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival! He announced to us during the show that he will be touring with Sir Tom Jones later this year – so this is certainly an up-and-coming musician!

AJ Brown played one of his original tracks at the piano and blew us all away.

This was my my first trip to the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival  and will definitely not be my last – I’m hooked. AJ Brown made me realise Jazz and Blues is a really wide category of music. I’m always someone who will admit when they are wrong and I was very wrong about Jazz and Blues – it is fantastic! AJ Brown introduced me into a brand-new category of music and I simply cannot wait to consume more! I’m scouring the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival line-up for more shows to see.
