What The Dickins: A Tale Of Edinburgh City

Top 5 Autumn walks in Edinburgh

12000 airbnbs in Edinburgh. Fact or Fiction

There’s no hiding the fact that we simply love Edinburgh and feel incredibly lucky to live in Scotland’s Capital. Every season has its merits, but our personal favourite is most definitely, Autumn. With the city bathed in warm light, the trees mixed shades of auburn and green and the cobbled roads paved in gold leaves, the city takes on a different character.

In order to help you make the most of the remainder of Autumn, we’ve drawn up a list of our top five autumnal Edinburgh walks.

1. Cramond Island

One of our personal favourites, Cramond Island can be accessed by a tidal causeway. Don’t forget to check the timetable on the noticeboard before you start the 1 mile long causeway crossing. A nice walk around the island will take about an hour, and there are plenty of areas for kids to explore, dogs to roam and picnics to be had. (Just remember to check the tide!)

2. Princes Street Gardens

Located in the heart of the city centre, Princes Street Gardens offer a peaceful refuge for those who need a break from the busy city streets. Home to the Scott Monument and with views of Edinburgh Castle, the gardens are lined with trees and scattered with benches dedicated to those who have loved the space. Set amongst a grove of silver birch trees in West Princes Street Gardens, a memorial to Robert Louis Stevenson, one of Scotland’s best known and best-loved writers, can be found.

4. The Water of Leith

We simply adore The Water of Leith. Running 24 miles through the city, the river passes through some of the prettiest parts of Edinburgh, including Dean Village. Ideal for family walks, the paved walkways are suitable for everyone; from children to grandparents. The walkway passes many points of interest including  Colinton Village and Dell, the Union Canal, Saughton Winter Gardens, Murrayfield Stadium, the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art, Dean Village, Stockbridge, the Royal Botanic Gardens and Leith.

5. Blackford Hill

Part of the Hermitage of Braid and Blackford Hill Local Nature Reserve, Blackford Hill is one of Edinburgh’s hidden gems. Deeply unappreciated, the hill has clear views over Edinburgh to the north, and the Pentland Hills to the south. Perfect for an October weekend stroll with the dogs.
