The capital spills out onto the streets in a heady mix of music, theatre, film, art and literature as festival season transforms every corner into a stage, gallery or late-night venue. Add to that Edinburgh’s legendary food and drink scene, unique architecture and unmistakable hospitality, and you have one of Europe’s most exciting summer destinations.

In the first of our summer series, we’re diving into the city’s festival calendar with our Edinburgh Summer Diary 2026: What’s On-your guide to our pick of the season’s unmissable events and cultural highlights. There’s never a dull moment in Edinburgh, but summer is when the city comes alive. Whether you’re planning a packed August of must-see shows or simply looking to soak up the atmosphere with great food, late-night drinks and unforgettable performances, our Summer Diary 2026 rounds up the events, festivals and cultural highlights set to define the season in Scotland’s capital.

Meadows Festival Now in the event’s 51st year, the Meadows come alive with stallholders, live music and performers.

Leith Festival Kicking off with Gala Day on Leith Links, you’ll find market stalls, hot food stalls, local makers, artists, food and live music in this community-driven festival.

Royal Highland Show The annual event, showcasing food, farming and rural life. We’re looking forward to Forestry Arena, The Forge, meeting craftmakers at their stands, sheep shearing competitions and of course Scotland’s Larder! Brand new to this year The Reeling on Saturday 20th June promises to bring the best in Scottish Trad Music to the Show with a line up that includes: Breabach, Dlu, Dougie MacLean, Elephant Sessions, Kinnaris Q and Skipinnish.

Until 28th June: Joan Eardley: the Nature of Painting is on at Modern Two exploring the vibrant works of one of Scotland’s most popular 20th century artists, Joan Eardley, and how she engaged with the world and artists around her.

Marking five years since the death of Elizabeth Blackadder: A Life in Colour looks at her enduring fascination with colour across a wide range of work. It showcases paintings and drawings alongside tapestries and rugs and works in the exhibition are available to purchase.

The much-loved Square Cinema returns this summer for three days of FREE outdoor movies in St Andrew Square Garden. Pick up provisions for a picnic, a beautiful, big schiacciata or a pizza and settle in.

Fresh from a sold-out season in London and a record-breaking tour across Australia and New Zealand, the critically acclaimed Dracula makes its Edinburgh debut. Choreographed by Joel Burke, and featuring a powerhouse international cast, this haunting retelling promises to unleash a collision of desire, torment and immortality.

Our friend Kirsty at À table is holding two Flower Bowl Workshop events this month where you can create your own wild and wonderful seasonal arrangements to take home. Included in the price are seasonal refreshments from Lore and a Lannan Bakery sweet treat upon arrival.

If you’ve never been to a Market Weekend at Bowhouse in Fife, this is your sign to go. You’ll find some of the best local food and drink traders from across Scotland at the monthly market as well as a wonderful independent bakery, brewery and taproom, and some beautiful shops.

Edinburgh’s original vintage market returns to Leith, as part of the Leith Festival. Funk Fair will be showcasing furniture, fashion, lighting, art, vinyl and more from independent traders. Vintage, mid-century and retro-we can’t wait!

Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival Venues across the city welcome an exciting line-up of jazz and blues artists from Scotland and around the globe for ten days of world-class music. The Festival opens with a burst of energy in the Grassmarket with its Mardi Gras bringing a free afternoon of New Orleans-style jazz. The programme is packed with international stars including acclaimed American saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins, jazz trio The Bad Plus and Louisiana blues sensation D.K.Harrell.

The Edinburgh Folk and Food Festival The Food Festival returns with its annual celebration of food and drink with chef demos, drink launches and street food stalls.

Art

Founded by Oscar and BAFTA-winning costume designer John Bright in 1965, legendary London-based Cosprop specialises in period costume for film, television and theatre. Cosprop is synonymous with dressing iconic characters in award-winning films and television, including Helena Bonham Carter in A Room with a View, Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey and Colin Firth as Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. Costume Couture: Sixty Years of Cosprop is a celebration of sixty years of Cosprop’s creativity and an opportunity to see behind the scenes of this celebrated costume house.

Step back in time to discover the glamour and opulence of early 20th century royalty through the lives and tastes of two of Britain’s most fashionable royal couples-King Edward V11 and Queen Alexandra, and King George V and Queen Mary. Join the team at The Taybank in Dunkeld, Perthshire, in the Taybank Gardens for a quintessentially British summer moment as they screen the Wimbledon Finals live by the River Tay. Strawberries and champagne anyone? Sounds like heaven.

Local Markets

The Neighbourgood Market continues its run from Wednesdays to Sundays until the 2nd August with streetfood, drink and great vibes. If you’ve not visited yet, this is your sign to.

If you feel like a weekday escape to Perthshire, Guardswell Farm hold its second of three locally grown food and drink markets this summer. Go along and support local farmers and food producers with loads of producers selling their beautiful produce.

Festivals

Edinburgh Festival Fringe

When: 7th-31st August

Where: venues across Edinburgh

Held in venues across the city, this is the largest arts festival in the world. It’s the place to spot up-and-coming artists as well as well-known names in theatre, dance, comedy, music, chidren’s shows and exhibitions. It’s also a hotspot for street-performers, showcasing music, magic, circus and more along the Royal Mile and The Mound.

Coinciding with the Fringe, the Edinburgh International Festival features a highly curated selection of artists and performers  to showcase unique collaborations, world premieres, and critically acclaimed productions in the sphere of music, theatre, opera & dance. It is a celebration of the performing arts and was established in 1947, to encourage the ‘flowering of the human spirit’ post world war. The theme for 2026 is ‘All Rise’. Highlights from this year’s programme include:

The Galloping Cure a darkly funny and fantastical operatic fable, makes its world premiere at the Festival Theatre this August. Missy Mazzoli, Royce Vavrek and Tom Morris already dazzled the Festival stage with Breaking the Waves back in 2019.

The UK premiere of Zurich Opera House’s production of Verdi’s A Masked Ball comes to the Festival Theatre as a fully staged tragicomic opera. Desire, treachery and political peril await.

San Fracisco Ballet presents a provocative myth for the AI age, in their futuristic retelling of Pandora’s Box. Mere Mortals is a fusion of classical technique, cutting edge visuals and electronic sound. Composer Floating Points performs his original score live with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. With 40 of the world’s best dancers commanding the Edinburgh Playhouse stage, this European premiere promises to be a breathtaking spectacle.

The world-famous Edinburgh Military Tattoo-music, dance, culture and military traditions against the iconic background of Edinburgh Castle. This year’s theme is A Call to Gather.

The UK’s largest annual festival of visual arts features world class art exhibitions at galleries across the city. We’re especially looking forward to catching the Gwen John: Strange Beauties exhibition. Marking 150 years since her birth at the National Galleries: Modern Two. The Welsh painter, best known for her intimate sensitive portraits and still life paintings studied at the Slade School of Art in London before moving to Paris where she settled.

Edinburgh International Book Festival

When: 15th-30th August

Where: Edinburgh Futures Institute, 1 Lauriston Place

The EIBF settled into its new venue in the heart of the Old Town last year, in the former Royal Infirmary Hospital building. The Festival hosts both prize-winning bestsellers and emerging writers. This year’s acclaimed lineup of major authors, public figures, journalists and historians include Pulitzer Prize-winning author Colson Whitehead, Outlander creator Diana Gabaldon, Booker Prize winner Kiran Desai, historian Tom Holland and journalist Lyse Doucet.

Edinburgh International Film Festival

When: 13th-19th August

Where: venues across Edinburgh

Renowned around the world for discovering and  promoting the very best in international cinema, cinema-lovers will be in for a treat. In its 79th year, the Festival will open with the international premiere of Edinburgh-born filmmaker Louis Paxton’s debut feature, an offbeat comedy, The Incomer.

The West End Fair starts its annual run in the tree-filled grounds of St John’s Church, at the corner of Princes Street and Lothian Road. This is always a must-visit event to pick up some beautiful and original crafts direct from the makers.
