Drinking Bailie Bar 2-4 St Stephen Street, Stockbridge, Edinburgh 0131 225 4673 Most residents of Edinburgh’s Stockbridge area and beyond know the Bailie Bar as their local - a traditionally oak-clad landmark always ready to offer a rescue from the banalities of life with its cosy fire and welcoming and well-lit bar. The Tuesday night pub quizzes have a steadfast following and the locals mix easily with the students who’ve come to test their intellectual talents. Drinking Hamiltons Bar 16-18 Hamilton Place, Stockbridge, Edinburgh 0131 226 4199 Situated in the affluent area of Stockbridge, Hamilton’s has long established itself as a great venue to eat, drink and enjoy. Only fair-trade and organic suppliers are used in dishes, charged at a reasonable price. Eating Hectors 47-49 Deanhaugh Street, Stockbridge, Edinburgh 0131 343 1735 Hectors is a real neighbourhood bar whose clientele reflects the diversity of the area. There's a mix of youthful students, thirtysomething couples and older folk enjoying a relaxing evening in vibrant, smart and welcoming surroundings. It's a difficult trick to pull off, but Hectors has been attracting such a varied crowd for nearly 20 years. Tables can be at a premium, but if you can find space among the sofas, chairs and stools for a meal, there's a fine selection of bar classics to choose from. Eating Maxi's 33 Raeburn Place, Stockbridge, Edinburgh 0131 343 3007 From the moment Maxi's opens its doors you are enticed by breakfasts of French toast with maple syrup, poached or scrambled eggs, the best eggs benedict i've ever tasted, through to lunchtime's soup, salads and the odd hot dish (plus those much-loved in-between-times chocolate and lemon drizzle cakes). Places of Interest Inverleith Park Arboretum Place, Edinburgh Inverleith Park is next to the Botanic Gardens, with 54 acres it is one of Scotland's largest urban parks. The park once formed part of the Inverleith Estate, which had been owned by the Rocheid family since 1665. The park is laid out with playing fields, tree-lined walk-ways and a sizeable pond. Most of the Park is parkland, used as recreational space and for rugby, football, cricket, baseball, children's play park, four tennis courts and a petanque court. Places of Interest Royal Botanic Gardens Inverleith Row [East Gate] & Arboretum Place [West Gate], Stockbridge 552 7171 The Botanic Gardens have one of most impressive collections of trees and plants in the world and is a gorgeous place to get lost in an while away a few hours. The glasshouses are where we Edinburgh folk used to go for a treat before the days of central heating! Inverleith House usually has an interesting modern art exhibition and the views of Edinburgh from here are stunning.
