Things to do

  • Drinking
    Bar Kohl

54 George IV Bridge ,Old Town 225 6936
Trendy and shiny. Big jugs of flavoured vodkas!

  • Drinking
    Whistle Binkies

    4-6 South Bridge, Old Town 557 5114
This is a popular pub which like most pubs/clubs is open till 5am during the Festival. The pub is a great music venue and is famed for is atmosphere and selection of beer.

  • Eating
    Petit Paris

    40 Grassmarket, Old Town, 226 2442
Charming restaurant in the heart of the Grassmarket. Fantastic venue for lunch, they do an excellent offer of a '£5 menu ' which is worth every penny. Fast and friendly service, always busy, and a strong feeling of actually being in France! Charmant.

  • Eating
    The Witchery

352 Castlehill, Royal Mile, Old Town  225 5613
Another romantic treat destination by James Thomson. This is one of Edinburgh’s most popular treat restaurants with locals, regulars and visiting celebs. It has two rooms the sultry upper room and the glamorous secret garden below. Great pre and post dinner menu.

  • Entertainment
    The Liquid Rooms

    9c Victoria Street, Old Town 225 2564
One of the hottest venues in Edinburgh hosting many club nights and live events.

  • Entertainment
    Usher Hall

     Lothian Road Tollcross 228 1155
The Usher Hall is one of the most outstanding concert halls in the world. A landmark in the heart of Scotland's capital, it stands for the highest level of musical and civic participation and is the home of The Royal Scottish National Orchestra which plays here every Friday night in its season. For the best part of a century it has hosted some of the greatest concerts and events in the city including conductors Herbert Von Karajan and Claudio Abbado, singers Ella Fitzgerald and Elton John and performers Stephane Grapelli and Simple Minds.

  • Places of Interest
    Camera Obscure

Castlehill, the Royal Mile, Old Town 226 3709
As Edinburgh’s oldest visitor attraction Camera Obscure is still as popular today as it was 150 years ago. With its quirky attractions including holograms of a giant, moving tarantula and Dracula rising from his coffin, it also takes a fascinating look at Edinburgh through the ages. Tours are fun as well as informative.
Open every day – [April - October 9.30am-6pm (or later)] – [November to March 10am-5pm]

  • Places of Interest
    Edinburgh Castle

    Old Town
As one of the most famous landmarks in Edinburgh, the Castle sits elegantly above the city. A visit to Edinburgh is truly not complete until you have walked round the site which dates from the 12th Century. As you explore, you can see the hourly changing of the guard and marvel at St Margaret's Chapel, the oldest building in Edinburgh, however do not be startled by the one o' clock gun salute, which happens on most weekdays.

  • Places of Interest
    Mary Kings Close

    2 Warriston's Close, Royal Mile, Old Town 0870 243 0160
If you are interested in Ghosts, monsters and legends then a trip down Mary Kings close is for you, however this experience is not just for ‘ghostbusters’, it also offers a great insight into the history of Edinburgh and how people lived in days gone by. Edinburgh’s Royal Mile used to boast as many floors underground as there are above and some pretty grim things went on so with much historical value and the spookiest atmosphere it is recommended not to go alone……!

  • Places of Interest
    Royal Mile

    Old Town
The Royal Mile (The High Street) is an unforgettable sight surrounded by steeply sloping cobbled streets and stunning architecture. It stretches down from the Castle to the Place of Holyrood House and unlike ‘High streets’ in many cities it is rich with specialist shops, small restaurants and intimate little bars. The Royal Mile is the focal point of the Festival and during the month of August has a carnival like atmosphere with stages featuring live performances, street performers, market stalls and much much more. Fascinating wynds and closes lead off the High Street and it has played host to many Edinburgh characters such as John Knox and the body snatchers Burke and Hare.

  • Shopping
    Armstrongs

    83 Grassmarket, Old Town, 220 5557
Prepare to enter the best ever dressing up box when you walk into this classic Edinburgh shop. It may smell a bit musty but it's the only place to go if you need a dressing up outfit or indeed a dinner jacket or a kilt. If you go with friends you are sure to have a laugh in the dressing rooms.

  • Shopping
    Hawick Cashmere Company

    71-73 Grassmarket, Old Town, 225 8634
It’s always divine to walk into a cashmere shop and try things on even if you don’t buy them, which will be difficult after you’ve realised just how gorgeous they feel. This shop has a superb selection.
