Things to do

  • Eating
    Café Marlayne

76 Thistle Street, Central New Town 226 2230
Genuinely French, tiny little restaurant that feels like a real find.
Scrumptious food although not great for veggies. Great value lunch.

  • Drinking
    Oloroso

33 Castle Street, Central New Town
This cool, modern bar is attached to a well regarded restaurant. There’s a superb, really large terrace for outdoor drinking in the summer and boasts some spectacular views to boot. The cocktails are divine.

  • Eating
    Café St Honoré

34 Thistle Street Lane, Central New Town 226 2211
Fabulous French restaurant with loads of character, with its bistro style décor and an Edinburgh institution. Frequented by business men and ladies who lunch this is an excellent occasion restaurant and feels just like being in Paris.

  • Places of Interest
    National Portrait Gallery

1 Queen Street Central New Town 624 6200
Provides a unique visual history of Scotland, told through portraits of the figures who shaped it: royals and rebels, poets and philosophers, heroes and villains. The collection includes work not only by Scottish artists but by great English, European and American masters such as Van Dyck, Gainsborough, Rodin and Kokoschka. In addition to paintings, the Portrait Gallery displays sculptures, miniatures, coins, medallions, drawings and watercolours. There’s a great café here too selling delicious home made food and some hard to resist cakes.

  • Shopping
    Flowers by Maxwell

32b Castle Street, Central New Town, 226 2866
Maxwell’s is another Edinburgh institution and if you are looking for something beautiful and traditional this is the person to see.

  • Shopping
    Jane Davidson

52 Thistle Street, Central New Town, 225 3280
Old Edinburgh favourite selling high fashion. Superb service.
