Things to do

  • Eating
    Number One Princes Street

Balmoral Hotel, Central New Town 556 2414
Probably the best ‘treat’ as far as dining in central Edinburgh goes. The service is impeccable, and with a Michelin Star under his hat Chef, Jeff Bland never fails to delight customers here. The menu is exquisite, with a fantastic deal at lunch time (they are threatening to stop this and we really hope they won’t) Sumptuous seats, a bread and cheese trolley and the presentation of his food is like a work of art. We could run dry on superlatives just thinking about it and it’s where we head when a serious treat is on order.

  • Entertainment
    The Omni Centre

    Hillside
Its large modern glass structure dominates but also complements the surrounding area. There’s a mix of nationwide bars and restaurants to suit most tastes. It also has a Holmes Place Gym and Vue cinema with the latest films showing.

  • Places of Interest
    Princes Street Gardens

    Central/West New Town
While in Edinburgh why not have a stroll through the picturesque Princes Street Gardens. In the summer you will see many people picnicking, taking a break from shopping and generally relaxing. While in the winter take a stroll in a ‘Winter Wonderland’ with ice-skating and funfairs. Princes Street garden is also a great venue and the famous Hogmanay Party boosts many famous musical acts performing in the gardens like Blondie, The Scissor Sisters and Texas to name but a few. These gardens are where the original stinking loch was drained at the time the New Town was built. This is the place to watch the amazing post festival fireworks display; surely one of the best in the world. Open til dusk.

  • Shopping
    Belinda Robertson

13a Dundas Street, Central New Town,
Jane sells her own beautifully designed Scottish knitted cashmere from her shop. There’s a permanent sale room downstairs for finding the odd bargain.

  • Drinking
    Forth Floor, Harvey Nichols

St Andrew Square, Central New Town
A new space has been created for cool folk to sip on a cocktail or too. Good vibe, great views both out of the window and behind the bar. Good selection of cocktails. You can sit outside in the summer and take in the stunning Edinburgh rooftop views.
