Where We Love to Drink in Edinburgh

Forth Floor, Harvey Nichols St Andrew Square, New Town
0131 524 8388
www.harveynichols.com
A new space has been created for cool folk to sip on a cocktail or two. Good vibe, great views both out of the window and behind the bar. Good selection of cocktails. You can sit outside in the summer and take in the stunning Edinburgh rooftop views.

Kay’s Bar, 39 Jamaica Street, New Town
0131 225 1858
Small and cosy, this old New Town favourite is always packed full. Great selection of real ales and good hearty crowd and very good value filling lunches. There’s always a fire burning in the winter.

Oloroso 33 Castle Street, New Town
0131 226 7614

This cool, modern bar is attached to a well regarded restaurant. There’s a superb, really large terrace for outdoor drinking in the summer and boasts some spectacular views to boot. The cocktails are divine.

This cool, modern bar is attached to a well regarded restaurant. There’s a superb, really large terrace for outdoor drinking in the summer and boasts some spectacular views to boot. The cocktails are divine, but they have a strange bar policy on the terrace.

Monteiths, 61 High Street, Old Town

This trendy restaurant and bar is a real find, literally, not one of the easiest places to find but a delight once you get there. Look out for the twinkly fairy lights. Great food, great cocktails!

Pubs

Canny Mans, 237 Morningside Road, Morningside
0131 447 1484
Charming, atmospheric pub which oozes character. Good selection of ales and an outstanding selection of malts and champagne if there’s something to celebrate. Find a cosy corner and while away a few hours. There’s so much to look at, it’s perfect if your conversation is drying up!

Sandy Bells, Forrest Road, Old Town
A trip to Sandy Bells is like stepping back in time. Live folk music every night and a great atmosphere in central unique pub.

Kay’s Bar, 39 Jamaica Street, New Town

Small and cosy, this old New Town favourite is always packed full. Great selection of real ales and good hearty crowd and very good value filling lunches. There’s always a fire burning in the winter.

Café Royal Bar, 17 West Register Street, New Town
0131 556 4124
This elegant Victorian bar is one of Edinburgh’s old favourites. Large central bar and often standing room only. Interesting looking crowd.

The Pond, 2 Bath Road, Leith
On the edge of a deserted dockland in Leith, this quirky pub is one of our personal favourites. Very quirky interior and crowd enjoying the laid back atmosphere. Enjoy sipping on your pint and gazing into their aquarium, or why not excite things with a game of addictive ‘Space Raiders’. A guaranteed good laugh.

Stockbridge Tap, 2-6 Raeburn Place, Stockbridge
0131 332 6345
A traditional Scottish bar with friendly staff, a good choice of ales at low prices with sports coverage on the television.

The Holyrood Tavern, 9a Holyrood Rd, Pleasance
0131 556 5044
One of Edinburgh’s most laid back pubs, with friendly bar staff and comfortable if not slightly old looking furniture. The chilled atmosphere makes you want to put your feet up and listen to tunes on the juke box.

The Bow Bar, 80 West Bow, Old Town
0131 226 7667
www.bowbar.com
A successfully revamped old style Edinburgh pub renowned for great variety of real ale and guest beers and a good selection of malts. Friendly local pub with no frills or themes. Sometimes frequented by City councillors and the occasional community education worker but still a great place. Only a 10 pace stagger from a brilliant cheese shop and a historically significant brush shop.

Doric Tavern & McGuffie's Bar, 15 Market St, Old Town
0131 225 5243
Traditional and cosy bar downstairs with a Bistro upstairs. Real ale, featured wines and imaginative food. Trendy-ish.

Bennets Bar, 8 Leven St, Tollcross
0131 229 5143
A real gem where three generations of the writer's family have supped. Beer suppliers and owners have changed over the years but it still has real ales and plenty of whiskies. Most fittings are original in this traditional Scottish pub with a formidable gantry, brass taps on the bar for water and a snug. In past days the newspaper seller would operate a self service system beside the coal fire and artists from the Kings Theatre next door would dash in for refuelling at the interval. Still some of that goes on reflected in the 'Green Room' through the back.

Cumberland Bar, 1-3 Cumberland Street, New Town
0131 558 3134
www.cumberlandbar.co.uk
Tucked away in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town is one of the Capital’s most famous pubs. Traditional, elegant and with the atmosphere of a real local it’s renowned for its huge range of cask conditioned ales, beers and a list of malt whiskies as long as your arm. It also has a very-popular beer garden.

Wine Bars

Sofi’s, Henderson Street, Leith
Sister to Swedish bar, Boda on Leith Walk which is also worth a visit. Stylish Scandinavian themed décor and food with laid back atmosphere. A good venue for proper chats and catch ups.

Whigham’s Cellar Bar, 13 Hope Street, West End
Busy drinking haunt, popular with suits and an excellent selection of wines. They have cosy candle lit snugs, so if you get there early enough, you can catch up with friends away from the crowds. Great simple menu too.

Le Di-vin, 9 Randolph Place, West End
0131 538 1815
Set in an old Polish converted church is this fantastic wine bar called Le Di-Vin. The towering wine bottle storage bins behind Le Di-Vin’s long bar and the numerous fridges show how seriously Le Di-Vin take their wine. This is further demonstrated by the wine menu of biblical proportions; Le Di-Vin offer around 60 glasses of wine by the glass and more by the bottle.
