What The Dickins: A Tale Of Edinburgh City

The Best Place to Spend Christmas in Edinburgh

The Photographer's Studio, Rock House (Edinburgh)

Still haven’t decided what to do for Christmas this year? Well not to worry, we have a few great suggestions for you! What about staying in the centre of Edinburgh in a charming place full of character that scores very high on the hygge (cosiness) scale?

We have the answer. We let a trio of fabulous self catering homes on Calton Hill: Rock House, The Terrace Apartment and The Photographer’s Studio. With the obligatory fireplaces/wood burners, comfy sofas and that homely feel they have great potential for a lovely Christmas away from home. Let’s take a closer look at this trio one by one.

Rock House

rockhouse

Sleeps 8 (2 doubles & 2 twins)

This historic house that was built in 1750 plays an important role in early photography and just has that wow factor. In 1843, Rock House was owned and lived in by pioneer photographers, Robert Adamson and David Octavius Hill. In 2015 the house was restored and refurbished by Studio Reed, who did an excellent job modernising the house whilst preserving that special feel of previous times.

Christmas in Edinburgh

Rock House is set over two floors and the best and most original place in Edinburgh for a fun family Christmas or a Christmas with a group of friends. The open plan kitchen/diner with an original Aga lends itself well to dinner parties or Christmas Day lunches. You’ve got wonderful views of the city and it’s only a few minutes away from Princes Street and shops, cafes and restaurants.

The Terrace Apartment

Sleeps 4 (1 double & 1 twin)

This unique and delightful apartment actually makes up the bottom floor of the Rock House. It’s called The Terrace Apartment because you step out on a beautiful terrace with views of the city when you leave the property. It’s decorated in the same style as the rest of the Rock House – to a very high standard that is. The living room is the heart of this place, and the perfect place to spend time with your loved ones. And just wait until you see the coffin bath!

The Photographer’s Studio

Sleeps 2 (1 double)

This ogee-roofed little house has to be one of the most romantic places to stay in Edinburgh. The Photographer’s Studio is next to the Rock House, behind the same beautiful iron gate as the two other properties. This place is both quirky and stylish at the same time, truly unique!

On the bottom floor you have a beautiful four poster bed as well as the bathroom. Climb the beautifully curved stairs and you’ll see the loveliest room that is octagonal in shape and has a domed ceiling – such a special room that lends itself so well to an intimate drink in front of a warming fire.
