What The Dickins: A Tale Of Edinburgh City

Edinburgh’s 10 Fabulous New Galleries

Ten fantastic new galleries have opened up at the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street and you need to see them! There truly is something for everyone and so many things to explore and try out yourself. As 2016 marks the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Museum the timing is perfect to say the least.

An impressive display of aircrafts from the Hawk Glider from 1896 to the Piper Tomahawk from 1979.

Over 3,000 fascinating objects have found their way to the new glass display cabinets – of which three quarters have been hidden away for generations! There is so much to see, from a huge actual rocket to a tiny mouse kidney. Not to mention the world’s most famous sheep, Dolly!

Black Knight Rocket

The Black Knight Rockets were British research rockets designed to study what happens when a vehicle re-enters the atmosphere.

If you like to get involved yourself there are almost 150 interactive displays, films and touch screens: you can generate electricity in a giant hamster wheel, test your driving skills in a Formula 1 car simulator or find out what it’s like to be a fashion designer. So much fun to be had!

The Fashion gallery displays some quirky things, such as these Iceberg shoes by WXY 2015…

We were more than excited to finally get to visit the new galleries and were very impressed with the selection of objects, the layout and the lighting. We highly recommend you experience it yourself – just make sure you reserve a good few hours for the visit! Oh, and whilst you’re there do go up to the rooftop terrace on the 7th floor and be amazed by the view of the city!
